Overview of Glass Units

An Overview of Glass Units

Overview? I thought they were see through!

Just two pieces of glass stuck together, right?... Not quite!
Double glazing is now the preferred method of glazing and mandatory in many cases. It can be done in a range of shapes and sizes and you can incorporate specialist glass such as the Low E, Patterned or Activ glass, for example.

A double glazed unit is made up of 2 panes of glass with a plastic or aluminium spacer bar between them. This is then sealed with sealant at over 200 degrees. We then tape the edges of our units to give them a clean edge.
What on earth is a spacer bar?
The spacer bar between the units comes in Black and White in Plastic (also known as warm edge) & Silver in aluminium. Gold and Brown aluminium are available but at an extra cost and a longer lead time.

Spacer bars come in the following thicknesses:

    • 6mm Aluminium only
    • 8mm Plastic and Aluminium
    • 10mm Plastic and Aluminium
    • 12mm Plastic and Aluminium
    • 14mm Plastic and Aluminium
    • 16mm Plastic and Aluminium
    • 18mm Plastic and Aluminium
    • 20mm Plastic and Aluminium
Anything else I should know?
Low E glass and gas filled are required in units if they are needed to come up to Building regulations.

6mm Glass can also be incorporated into double glazed units but this does make them very heavy.

Almost all types of glass can be made into units.

Also units can be gas filled with Argon or Krypton.

There is no such thing as a Standard Unit. Many people ask us to make them a "standard unit". We can only make units to the sizes we are given and there is no such thing as a standard thickness. There are over 80,000 combinations of double glazed units, we need to know which one you want!

In our workshop the glass is cut in one process and the spacer bar in another, they come together when constructing the unit. If they don't match up then something is wrong and it is corrected to the ordered size. We believe our procedure makes it almost impossible for units to be made wrong unless it is a processing error.
Do you offer a guarantee on your units?
Yes we do!

We guarantee our units for 10 years in UPVC frames and in Wood frames when glazed with foam glazing tape on a drained frame. On un-drained wooded frames there is a 5 year guarantee.

We've very proud of the units we make and anticipate they will last many years longer than our guarantee!
I've heard of Triple Glazing, do you make those too?
We do indeed!

We can also make triple glazing which is a 3 panes of glass with a spacer bar between each. As with double glazed units we can make these to any combination.

If you have any questions about double glazed or triple glazed units then please do not hesitate to contact us.
